Bacteriostatic Water: A Reference Guide

What it is

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing a small amount of a preservative (typically 0.9% benzyl alcohol) that inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowing a sealed vial to be accessed multiple times while maintaining sterility. It is supplied in multi-dose vials.

How it differs from sterile water

Sterile water for injection contains no preservative and is intended for single use. Bacteriostatic water’s benzyl alcohol content is what makes a multi-dose vial possible.

Storage and handling

• Store at controlled room temperature unless otherwise specified on the label.
• Keep the vial sealed until use; wipe the stopper before each access.
• Note the date of first access; observe the labeled in-use period.
• Discard if the solution is discolored or the seal is compromised.

Shelf life

Unopened vials carry a labeled expiration date. Once accessed, the labeled in-use period applies.

Sizes

Commonly supplied in 30ml multi-dose vials; larger formats may be available.
